When food is rare, we need to go
to the places of plenty that we know.
It’s an epic trek across the nation,
you call it seasonal migration.
So when the weather is right,
we’ll hit the heights.
See the stormy petrels in the rain,
the cuckoo, curlew, the crake, and crane...
Life is a flyway, I gotta fly it, taking off...
(South in fall, North in spring, with the wind beneath my wings!)
Lie is a flyway, I can’t deny it, day and night...
(A “V” in flight!)
The journey’s long, but we see it through,
if now and then there’s a swamp or slough,
On a long summer trip in your car,
with no food or fuel, you couldn’t get far...
Our gas stations are diff’rent from yours,
they’re wetlands, ponds, and lakes and shores...
We love cruisin’ through the sky,
and now you know the reason why...
Life is a flyway, I gotta fly it, taking off...
(South in the fall, North in the spring, with the wind beneath my wings!)
Life is a flyway, I can’t deny it, day and night...
(A “V” in flight!)
Millions of species try their luck:
the geese, the gulls, the swans and ducks,
great gray owls in the night,
the cat-bird, cow-bird, kill-deer, kite;
The golden-eye and the golden plover,
one good tern deserves another!
The road-runner, the robin, wren,
there’re many others, just say when!
How do we navigate the trip
with no GPS or computer chip?
We follow the sun, stars, and moon,
to rivers and mountains we are attuned.
We even use magnetic fields
that to humans are concealed.
We’re the wax-wing, willet, whippoorwill, wigeon,
pelican, pewee, pintail, pigeon...
Life is a flyway, I gotta fly it, taking off...
(South in fall, North in spring, with the wind beneath my wings!)
Life is a flyway, I can’t deny it, day and night...
(A “V” in flight!)
(Fade on repeat)
Life is a flyway, I gotta fly it, taking off...
(South in fall, North in spring, with the wind beneath my wings!)
Life is a flyway, I can’t deny it, day and night...
(A “V” in flight!)
